Review:

I wanted to like Transformers, Michael Bay’s newest, loudest, Hollywood romp. I collected the toys as a kid and to me they were the apex of childhood entertainment. It’s a car. It’s a robot. It’s a car again? It’s a cartoon show! What else could I ask for? Unfortunately the live-action movie gets stuck. Transformers starts off great but changes into a train wreck about half-way through.

This amazing cinematic transformation is the result of a common summer-movie blunder–the basic fact that a project is going to be huge regardless of what happens, so it is simply handed off to the special effects department (in this case the ubiquitous Industrial Light and Magic) while the writers and actors ad-lib much of the film. Most people will not mind one bit simply because of the Transformers themselves. They are the coolest creations I have seen in a movie all summer and you can hardly tell that they live and die in the CGI world. It’s all very seamless.

The movie does a nice job building up momentum and urgency. You witness a Decepticon (the evil cadre of Transformers) searching for a unique power source known as the Allspark, and trashing a U.S. military installation in the process. The protagonist Sam (Shia LeBeouf) is introduced, a teenager who unknowingly possesses the key to the location of the Allspark. Sam learns that the Autobots need what he has. The fate of the universe (or something) hangs in the balance. The movie’s foundations set, it then transforms into a real mess.

The Autobots bumble about Sam’s backyard, crushing his dad’s flower garden, freaking Sam out. They inexplicably attempt to hide from Sam’s parents who peer out the window wondering what is making all that noise. Meanwhile, remember, the fate of the universe hangs in the balance. Then John Turturro shows up and even the Autobots are rendered powerless next to his manic riffing. Turturro was presumably given a lot of leeway when playing the cliche role of uptight government agent but it comes across as a leftover caricature from his acting school days.

The Uptight Federal Agent is just one of many blatant stereotypes Transformers manages to cram into the movie. There’s also the hyper and fat hacker who lives with his grandma. There’s the apathetic, Indian phone operator. There’s a jab about the intelligence of Iranian scientists. There are comments about the Japanese. There’s a token Latino soldier. There’s the incredibly hot, super-smart signals intelligence analyst. Most of these characters have no purpose what-so-ever other than to be involved in the biggest movie of the summer. Their appearances and ad-libbing quickly brings an impressive movie back down to earth. You realize that this movie about Transformers actually follows all of the very basic and mundane plot sequences and character stocking that we have come so used to in summer blockbusters.

I found the characters in the cartoon show (not to mention the cartoon movie) to have more depth. Who even watching Michael Bay’s rendition knew Starscream existed until two hours into the movie? That’s no fun. We weren’t even allowed to find out how evil Megatron was until the final, frantic battle scene where the characters decide to take the Allspark the middle of Los Angeles so the Transformers can destroy a lot of infrastructure. Oh, and one of the Autobots dies. But we never really got to know him anyway. A sad waste.

There is a difference between this movie and Spiderman, another famous summer blockbuster. In the latter, characters were taken seriously and allowed to develop. The movie was exciting but also efficient and smart. Transformers is a bloated mess where the plot becomes nothing but a vehicle to cram in as many enthusiastic actors, products, and explosions as possible. In this way, I suppose, the whole thing is the perfect twenty year evolution of the original TV show, which surely had no other purpose than to sell toys to children like me, high on sugar. Michael Bay turned out to be the perfect choice to defrost this franchise and let it run wild.

Transformer the movie

Fact: Transformers begins with the reason for the alien robots’ existence. How the all important AllSpark (essentially the life giver) was lost into the vacuum of space after the robots divided between good and evil. Falling onto Earth, a handful of these entities travelled the galaxy to find this all important device. Great premise, but how about the execution? Visually, the film is astounding. ILM have outdone themselves once again and have created top notch visuals for others to measure up to. The robots look real, feel weighty yet elegant, and with every Bay movie, there are explosions. And what beautiful explosions they are. This is complemented with a hit-and-miss musical score. At times, the score is cinematic brilliance. At other times, you wonder why Linkin Park was included, when sequences with emotional pieces are suddenly juxtaposed with the current Billboard Hot 100.

Transformers the Movie

An excerpt of a movie review from SmartCine.com:

“Director Michael Bay known more for intense action sequences than a cohesive plot remains faithful to his style. The plot is rather weak and mainly used to showcase the Transformers while sacrificing the narrative. The action, however, will leave you breathless. The special effects are nothing short of spectacular. You will be hard press to find a single flaw in any of the special effect sequences. These are the best special effects to date on any film and alone worth the price of admission. It is absolutely amazing seeing the transformation from harmless vehicle to fierce alien robot.”

Transformers: The Movie (2007)

After about 20 years, a live movie adaptation of this series came out directed by Michael Bay. The main cast consists of Shia LeBouf (Sam Witwicky), Megan Fox (Mikaela Banes), Josh Duhamel (Sergeant Lennox) and Jon Voight (Defense Secretary John Keller). The movie is rated PG-13 and is distributed under di Bonaventura Pictures, Inc., Paramount Pictures.

I honestly wasn’t expecting very much from the human contingent of the cast, but on a whole they’re able to hold their own amidst the huge shadow of SFX and set-pieces. LaBeouf’s performance as Sam is excellent. He’s really coming into his own as an action star and I expect we’ll see him in that guise a lot in the coming years. The supporting cast is solid enough, with Jon Voight as the hands-on Secretary of Defense, Josh DuhamelTyrese Gibson representing the enlisted military contingent with balls of titanium, John Tutorro as a low rent M.I.B. impersonator, and Anthony Anderson as ultra computer hacker/comic relief.” from http://geeksofdoom.com/2007/06/29/movie-review-transformers/

Movie review:

“I wasn’t always clear on the robot rules: They lumber around — and then they can fly. De-limbed by conventional weapons, they reconstitute themselves and appear to be indestructible — until they get destroyed. Bay, at heart, isn’t a fantasist; he’s a literal-minded maestro of demolition. But then, that serves Transformers well during its climax, a spectacular clash of the heavy metal titans, and a primal reminder of why boys love their toys.”

TRANSFORMERS

Opinion:
Transformers is an all-out robot deathmatch of epic scope, grandiose enough to melt your eyeballs after viewing the Ark of the Covenant.

It’s simple. Do you like robots fighting and breaking stuff? Then you’ll love Transformers, a movie about two races of transforming robots, the Autobots and the Decepticons, fighting over the fate of Earth.

Transformers is based on the 80s toy and cartoon series… nearly every male of my demographic (24-29) grew up desperately wishing to be taken away by the Transformers and converted into a transforming robot. I wanted this so bad that I used to ‘practise’ transforming into the few shapes that I could manage, ie. a chair, a mat, part of the wall, etc.

Needless to say, this ultra-violent movie scratches a more-than-seven year old itch that has been festering with dreams and nostalgia. No expense has been spared, neither on the filmmaking nor the marketing side, ensuring that this 4th of July release will be the hit of the summer.

Skeptics were fretfully worried that Michael Bay would drop the ball on this, and packs of fanboys sharpened their canines in preparation for a deadly advance on Bay’s studio. They can rest assured, however, that Transformers will live up to the hype.

Robots fighting. And breaking stuff.

The Cast:

-Shia LaBeouf as Sam Witwicky
-Megan Fox as Mikaela Banes
-Josh Duhamel as Sergeant Lennox
-Tyrese Gibson as USAF Tech Sergeant Epps
-Rachael Taylor as Maggie Madsen

The Transformers, showing on July 3rd, 2007. PG-13 for intense sequences of sci-fi action violence, brief sexual humor and language.

Review:

By Michael Phillips
Tribune movie critic

Some of us missed the “Transformers” craze by a few years, and we’re just now getting up to slow-lane, crushed-by-fanboys speed on the matter of Autobots and Decepticons and a generation’s worth of transmogrifying merchandise.
The film’s PG-13 rating ensures that millions of parents will mistakenly let their 6-year-olds see the film — which isn’t a bad film, and is sometimes quite deliriously pretty good — because it comes from a beloved line of toys. Never mind that Shia LaBeouf, the nominal, non-mechanical star of “Transformers,” has described Bay’s achievement as “aneurysm-inducing.” That’s a compliment. In Bay’s world, which is more about metal than people, every action sequence must be edited like a cinematic seizure and every extreme-telephoto image must be jammed headlong into the next.

The movie is noisy fun, with characters and plot lines kept simple and flashes of comedy that hit home more often than not. Most importantly, the filmmakers have shrewdly selected their young cast. Shia LaBeouf is one of the hottest young actors on the planet at the moment, with the surprise hit thriller “Disturbia” and excellent lead vocal performance in the animated comedy “Surf’s Up” already behind him this year. Megan Fox and Rachael Taylor add terrific sex appeal in roles designed to emphasize female capability and intelligence. And singer-actor Tyrese Gibson and Josh Duhamel are the smart-looking military dudes who take on the aliens at street level.
